 The by-pass tube conveys the air into the mouthpiece creating a "vortex" movement with a depression zone in the center that keeps the membrane lowered during inspiration, to offer simple and natural breathing at any depth. 

 It minimizes the drop in intermediate pressure during inspiration, thus maximizing the flow of air delivered, especially in extreme conditions.
